I’m sure you’ve heard of MAX 94.1 or WFMF 102.5, but have you heard of WSUB 106.1 LPFM: The Bluff? You read that right, folks, WSUB 106.1 LPFM: The Bluff! Southern University and A&M College is currently working on its own radio station. This station will serve as both a platform for the community and a training ground for the students. Formerly known as WTQT 106.1, it was a station strictly programmed as a 24-hour gospel station. This change opened doors for a more diverse programming style. This station will be a place for music, talk shows, and interviews. WSUB was relaunched on August 1st under the Department of Mass Communications. The goal is to build one of the top student-run radio stations in the nation.
The development of WSUB is being carried out in phases. Phase one involved officially taking over and rebranding the station. Phase two now focuses on student involvement. An interesting meeting was held for students in the Department of Mass Communications, applications have been accepted, and a first cohort of student personalities is being formed. By the end of this semester, the station expects to have students actively producing and hosting content. Plans include relocating the station’s physical location. Currently housed off Government Street, the long-term vision is to move WSUB into Stewart Hall, where it will be more closely connected to the Department of Mass Communications. This move has already been budgeted for and could begin within the next six months, depending on funding and execution.
This is an exciting hands-on opportunity for mass communication students who aspire to work in radio, podcasting, and other media-related fields. Like many students, Eryka Jackson shared that she is super excited about this launch as she applied herself. “I’m looking forward to hearing the new voices on campus and hopefully sharing my own journey,” she stated. This station will give them the chance to gain real-world broadcasting experience that will not only be heard by them, but by their peers and members of their community. However, beyond its professional development, as Mass Communications Department Chair, Dr. Yolanda Campbell says, “The station will also serve as the voice for Southern University and the Baton Rouge community.” As understood, people view our campus and community sometimes in a negative light, but a radio station will give Southern University and Baton Rouge the chance to show what they are really capable of and about. Participation in the station will continue to grow. The plan is to hold interest meetings at the beginning of each semester, giving students opportunities to join and contribute. This structure mirrors other campus organizations and ensures a steady flow of new talent each academic year.
The station’s mission extends beyond campus news. While it highlights Southern University’s programs and departments, WSUB is also committed to serving the wider Baton Rouge community. Nonprofits, alumni, and community members will be welcomed as partners and contributors. By doing this, WSUB 106.1 hopes to amplify voices, highlight important events, and control the narrative around Southern University and its impact. Student Leon Thomas says, “This is what the campus needs! I think the station would be engaging and beneficial to the students, a part of it, and those who listen to it.” With this vision, WSUB is positioning itself not just as a student-led radio station but as a bridge between the university and the community, ensuring that both education and engagement remain at the heart of its mission.
In short, WSUB 106.1 LPFM is more than a radio station. It is an educational tool, a community platform, and a symbol of Southern University’s commitment to excellence in media and communication. With its student-driven focus, the station will prepare future media professionals while also uplifting the stories, culture, and achievements of both the university and its surrounding community.
