The event “Out of the Mud: The Connection of HBCUs to Historical Black Success” was an inspiring gathering for students! Led by the engaging Dr. Jarrod D. Benjamin, Global Speaker & Social Justice Educator, the discussion focused on the important role Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) play in today’s world. Dr. Benjamin used examples of well-known public figures to create a strong story that helped the audience connect with the idea of “Out the Mud.”
“Out the Mud” represents strength and overcoming challenges in the African American community. Dr. Benjamin highlighted the incredible journey of HBCUs in America—schools that have always supported future leaders and built strong communities. He emphasized their lasting importance, leaving students feeling empowered and ready to make a difference!
Dr. Benjamin also addressed the political and social responsibilities of HBCU students. “‘For Us By Us’ is more than a clothing label—it’s what we experience daily,” he said. “If we can’t be our own advocates and allies, we can’t depend on others to do it. Not only is attending an HBCU important, but being an activist while there is crucial. Who we put in office determines the future success and funding of our HBCUs.”
To further engage the students, Dr. Benjamin referenced Kendrick Lamar’s bold Super Bowl performance. “Kendrick Lamar took the most viewed platform where the audience didn’t look like him and delivered a powerful social message. It may have gone over some heads, but it resonated with us because we understood its significance,” he explained. Dr. Brown used this example to demonstrate how modern figures create meaningful connections with today’s generation.
“While I celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Huey P. Newton, they are not the heroes of this generation,” Dr. Benjamin noted. “The people we see today on our screens, making a difference and unifying us, are the ones who inspire this generation. I had to use names that would ring a bell with those seated in this room.”
The event closed with a call to action, urging students to continue embracing the legacy of HBCUs by becoming leaders, advocates, and changemakers. Dr. Benjamin’s blend of historical insight and contemporary relevance left a lasting impression on attendees, reinforcing the role of HBCUs in shaping Black success today and for generations to come.
