In the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, tucked away in a hallway near the game room, lies a vital yet underutilized resource: Southern University’s Food Pantry. This initiative has the potential to alleviate food insecurity for many students, but it remains relatively unknown across campus.
Could the pantry’s location—secluded in a quieter part of the Union—be contributing to its low visibility? While this placement provides privacy for students who might feel hesitant or embarrassed about utilizing such a resource, it may also hinder awareness. For students facing financial challenges while balancing academic responsibilities, the pantry could be a lifeline.
The food pantry was established in 2017 but only began operations in 2019 due to delays in Student Government Association deliberations. “Food insecurity is a real issue on college campuses, but many students are reluctant to seek help because of the stigma,” explained Union Building Administrator Cedric Nolan. “The placement here ensures that students can come and go discreetly without feeling judged.”
Stocked with essentials like canned goods, pasta, and rice, as well as occasional hygiene products, the pantry serves as a safety net for students struggling to make ends meet. However, awareness remains a challenge. Sophomore Garell Robinson, for example, admitted, “No, I was unaware of the food pantry.” His response echoes the sentiment of many students who might greatly benefit from the resource.
Others, like sophomore psychology major Stephan Marks, have heard of the pantry but never visited. “I just don’t know where it is,” he said. When asked if he would take advantage of the resource if its location were more widely known, Marks replied enthusiastically, “Absolutely, that’s free food!”
To address this gap, student organizations and staff are brainstorming strategies to increase awareness while maintaining the pantry’s discreet location.
The food pantry is more than a practical resource—it’s a testament to the Southern University community’s care and commitment. It reminds students that they are not alone in their struggles. For those in need or looking to contribute, the food pantry is a quiet but impactful presence, making a difference one meal at a time.
The pantry is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Students with a valid ID can access its resources. For more information about its offerings, visit the Instagram page @jaguareats.
