Southern University Athletics celebrated decades of excellence Friday night, inducting a new class into its prestigious Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony, held at L’Auberge Casino & Hotel in Baton Rouge, brought together alumni from over 60 years, their families, and supporters to commemorate this significant moment in Jaguar history.
The 2024 Hall of Fame class is a testament to the legacy of Southern University Athletics, showcasing athletes, coaches, and contributors who have made remarkable strides on the court, the field, and beyond. From breaking records to inspiring new generations, this year’s inductees represent the best of Southern University’s rich athletic tradition.
“It means the world to me to know that my efforts were not in vain,” said inductee Candace Southall, a former volleyball player. “Walking into here made me realize how prestigious this is. To be honored this way is a really big deal, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity.”
Southall’s former coach, Nathaniel Denu, who served Southern University and A&M College for more than 30 years, had the privilege of awarding his former players the institution’s highest athletic honor. Southall reflected on the lasting impact of Denu’s mentorship: “Coach Denu, thank you for teaching me the value of holding myself and others accountable, of leading by example, and doing what’s right, even when it’s not easy.”
She also emphasized the importance of personal growth through sports, offering advice to current athletes: “Build bonds with your teammates that will last a lifetime and don’t let fear of failure hold you back. Next play!”
In addition to the ceremony’s speeches, attendees were treated to heartfelt moments, including tributes to family members who had supported the honorees through their athletic journeys. Southall acknowledged her connection to the current team, saying, “I have a player that I coach on the Southern team right now, her name is Bailee St. Romin, and it’s just an honor to see her play at my alma mater.”
The evening was capped with a celebratory Second Line in true Louisiana fashion, allowing attendees to honor the inductees while embracing Southern’s vibrant culture. The energy was palpable as the crowd danced and celebrated the achievements of the 2024 class, creating a moment that will be cherished for years to come.
