It was senior night for the ladies of the Southern University Volleyball team. They would face the Alcorn State Braves in Clifford Seymor Gym. They also looked to continue their winning streak after beating Texas Southern in their previous matchup.
During Senior night, senior outside hitter Tamara Chavez, graduate student middle blocker Alicia Hearn, senior defensive specialist/libero Trenity Lundy, senior defensive specialist Marian Attaway, senior middle blocker Jordan Wheeler, senior right side Bailee St. Romain, and senior middle blocker Jasmine Okafor all started last night’s game against the Lady Braves volleyball team.
During this game, every one of the seniors had a share of points, whether it was off of Alcorn’s consecutive out-of-bounds penalties or missed opportunities to score from Southern’s serves. Southern last night showed a defensive presence from blocks to serves, to put back plays to stop Alcorn from having the momentum to get a comeback in the first and second sets. They dominated the Lady Braves in the first set, scoring 25 points compared to Alcorn’s dismal 3. The momentum the Lady Jags gained transferred to the second set, which was a dominating 25-13 period. The identical score from the previous period translated to the third period, meaning the Lady Jaguars volleyball team finished their home schedule with a 3-0 sweep vs Alcorn State Lady Braves on Senior Night.
Chavez talked about her experience at Southern, mentioning she is going to miss the people and the friendships.
Alyssa Hearn spoke on the mindset of the team, saying their mindset for the game is to finish with a bang. She was emotional throughout the ceremony honoring the seniors.
Former Head Coach Vanessa Jacobs was in attendance, and she spoke on her time at Southern
, saying that she enjoyed the past two years coaching Southern women’s volleyball. She also said that they began to be complacent with some early struggles in the third set of the game.
Tamara Chavez capitalized on 12 points off of serves. Alysha Hearn capitalized on 6 scores versus the Braves. Southern had 27 kills, 20 aces, 24 assists, and 29 digs. Also, much improvement was seen in the attack errors category, having 5 attack errors.
Senior Tamara Chavez is on her way to leading the SWAC with 867 kills in her career. Senior Tamara Chavez talked about that accomplishment, this accomplishment makes her happy about where her career is going.
Southern would go on to defeat the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 3-1 in 4 sets, making them 7-6 in the conference. The Jaguars will be in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on November 22.
