In a neck and neck game between the Southern Lady Jaguars Volleyball team versus The Prairie View A&M Panthers, was competitive throughout for four sets. The Lady Jags started off hot in the first period blocking the Lady Panthers’ shots and countering their plays, allowing the Lady Jags to win 25-23. However, the Lady Panthers did not waste any time taking over the momentum of the game. In the second period, it became evident the Lady Jags’ lack of communication allowed for some coverage mishaps that the Lady Panthers kept exploiting. The same situation happened in the third period, with the Lady Jags starting off strong, making it competitive, countering their shots and blocks. However, by the end of the period, the Lady Jags seemed to run out of gas, faltering the set to lose 25-19.
Southern Volleyball head coach Dawn Barnes provided insight into the loss, and what improvements can be expected, “we did not do well serving or applying pressure on the service line like Praire View did; were not able to take care of the ball when it mattered in the game.” Also, Coach Dawn said that they were not able to capitalize on the PV offense and that the “serving game is either you win it or you don’t.”
After the game, Senior outside hitter Tamera Chavez spoke on the up-and-down day the Lady Jags had, “There were moments that were great but other moments they weren’t great.” She also said that the way
to improve is to “put the game behind them and focus on the next one.” The Lady Jags had a lot of mistakes in the game against Prairie View A&M, including having 33 attack errors compared to PV’s 23. The Lady Jags also lost in the Aces department, only having 4 compared to the Lady Panthers’ 10.
The Lady Jags lost in 4 sets, 1-3, dropping them to 7-19 overall and 4-6 in conference play, including a 3-game losing streak. The Lady Jags will face the Texas Southern Tigers on Monday, November 4, 2024, and will also prepare for Senior Night against the Alcorn State Braves on November 7, 2024, at 6 PM.
