The Southern University Lady Jags’ soccer team (0-6-1 overall, 0-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) has not won a game yet this season.
But they plan to capitalize on a win in two games this weekend against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University.
Brookhaven, Miss. will be the site of the two teams’ first meeting this season. The first game will be today at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Hurricane Ivan caused a delay of their previously scheduled Sept. 17 match. Southern head coach Rohan Naraine canceled the game due to concerns of the team’s safety.
Naraine added that the previous losses of the Lady Jaguars’ season are behind them and that his team is looking forward to make it to the SWAC tournament.
“This is the second half of our season, this is where it counts,” he said. “The ultimate goal is we want a conference spot. I think our girls are ready.”
Last season, Alcorn State and Southern met at Clark Park in Baker. The Lady Jags’ topped the Lady Braves 2-0.
“Alcorn State is really aggressive and it (winning) depends on whether or not we play as a team,” Lady Jags’ stopper Stephanie Robinson said.
Alcorn State has lost every game in the 2003 season while Southern finished the season with a 6-5 record.
“Alcorn State is adjusting to new coaching, which may help their athletic ability. They are a lot better than they were last year, yet both teams are even in sportsmanship,” Naraine said.
According to Naraine, Southern planned on making a few changes to strategize the team’s athletic ability.
“I think maybe we’ll change the line-up a bit and put pressure on defense,” he said.
The Lady Jaguars next home game is Oct. 1 at Clark Park against the Lady Hornets of Alabama State University. Game time is at 4 p.m.
The first conference game for Southern is a home game scheduled for Oct. 3 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The game will be both teams inaugural meeting this season.
