The royal blue personalizedbenches located at various locations on campus have added a pricey yetbeautiful touch to Southern University.
“Dr. Gillory, Dr. Downs andmyself saw a need to beautify the campus,” said Linda Mary Crawford, plantadministrative services assistant. ”The campus needed a facelift.”
The royal blue benches reading,Southern Jaguars can be found in front of the John B. Cade Library, T.H. HarrisHall, Stewart Hall and Fisher Hall. The benches are made of thermoplastic castiron and are mounted permanently.
“I think that the benches aregood,” said Thomas Garner, a junior political science major from BatonRouge. “They’re nice to havebecause we’ve never had them before.”
There are a total of sixbenches. Each bench cost$850. Additional benches arescheduled to arrive in early October, in time for Homecoming festivities.
“There are hopes to have at leastfifty benches eventually,” Crawford said.
Future locations for the”Southernized” benches include in front of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union,School of Nursing, Mississippi River and the dormitories.
“They also help with socialaspects,” Garner said. “You areable to meet people.”
In addition to the benches, newbike racks have been purchased and placed on campus. There are two located at the Pavilion and one at the StudentUnion. Additional racks will bepurchased and arrive in the near future.
New trash receptacles will arriveduring the first week of September to continue the beautification process forcampus. At $286 each, D. HonoreConstruction Inc., located on Perkins Road, donated a total of 10 receptaclesto the University.
To further beautify the campus,mats and banners will be placed at various locations on campus. The mats are blue with blue and goldwriting. A total of five banners will be added. Examples include Alumni and Friends, Home of the JaguarNation and Welcome to Jaguar Land.
