Miss Southern,Enitra Jones, will hold her coronation and ball, themed “Precious Moments inTime,” at the F.G. Activity Center on September 24 at 7 p.m.
StudentGovernment President Arthur Monroe will be her escort.
Jones, a nativeof Gretna, was elected by the SU student body to be Miss Southern 2004-2005.She is a senior biology major with a minor in chemistry.
The daughter ofEzra and Evelyn Jones, she is a member of the Southern University HonorsCollege, Beta Beta Beta, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Microbiology Club,Black History Club, NAACP, president of Beta Kappa Chi, president of theNational Institute of Science, treasurer of Minority Association of Pre-HealthStudents and Southern’s executive director of Up ‘Til Dawn, a charitableprogram.
In addition toher involvements, she has interned with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitaland LeBonheur Children’s Hospital. Her honors and awards include an HonorsCollege scholarship, T.O.P.S. scholarship, Brown Community Service Award,National Dean’s List and Memphis McNair Scholar.
Members ofJones’ royal court are also excited about the event.
“I feel it’sgoing to nice and elegant. It’sgoing to be very special and different,” said Antigone Chafford, Miss Junior.
The royal courtwill include Rochelle Leschonne Lee, Miss Senior, a mass communication majorfrom Los Angeles; Chafford, Miss Junior, a criminal justice major from Bastrop;Sonya Renee’ Gaines, Miss Sophomore, a nursing major from Baton Rouge; and MissFreshman, to be announced.
“I think it’sgoing to be very beautiful. I’m looking forward to it. I’m very excited andanxious,” Gaines said.
This year’scoronation will include a musical performance by Bad Boy recording artist CarlThomas.
“It wasoriginally Chancellor Jackson’s idea to bring a celebrity. It was the generalconsensus of the coronation committee to attract more students,” Jones said.”We felt he would help set the tone for the coronation.”
Thomas is aplatinum-selling artist known for his debut album Emotional.
The eventrequires formal gowns for females and suit and tie or tuxedos for males.Attendees will be admitted with student I.D. or invitation.
