The winless streak is over for the Southern University women’s soccer team.
The Lady Jags (2-6-1 overall) faced the Alcorn State University Lady Braves at Clear Creek Golf Course Soccer Field in Vicksburg, Miss. and captured not one but two wins in a heavily anticipated match up against Alcorn State.
“Finally, we played together as a team,” said Southern head coach Rohan Naraine. More conditioning helped us win this past week. (We did) more ball work and going to the goal.”
In the first game, senior middle blocker Hilary Bruno scored her second and third goals of the season in Southern’s 4-0 win. Sophomore forward Ashley Boutte and sophomore defensive end Cyra Charles both scored a goal.
The Lady Jags shut out Alcorn State 4-0 again in the second game. Junior middle blocker Khalea Fields led with two goals while both Bruno and Boutte scored one apiece.
“The first half of this season was tough because we played out of conference teams that have been established for years.” Naraine said.
In a game that will not count in conference standings, Southern will face Alabama State University at Clark Park in Baker on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.
On Oct. 3, the Lady Jags will host the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 1 p.m. in their first televised game. The game will be aired live on the Pelican Sports Network.
Donation packages are still available for the first soccer game ever to be televised in SWAC history.
After facing UAPB, the Lady Jags will have to face Texas Southern on the Lady Tigers’ turf on Oct. 8 in Houston. Southern has to defeat both UAPB and TSU to capture a seed in the upcoming SWAC tournament, which will be held in November.
