Citizen Change,an organization founded by Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, who proclaims the message”Vote or Die, the Southern University Student Government Association and KappaAlpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will host a voter awareness event Wednesday, Oct. 27at 1-3 p.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center at Southern University.
The event isopen to all college students in the state of Louisiana.
“Because it’sstatewide 5,000-8,500 people are expected to show up for this event,” saidKaRhonda “Kay” Scriven, an SU student and coordinator for the event.
According to apress release from the SGA office, local musical act US3, Senator Mary Landrieuand a host of other community leaders and artists will be in attendance tosupport this program. The Black Caucus, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., andBlack Youth Vote (Unity ’04) are also participants in the event.
P. Diddy wasoriginally expected to be present.
“P. Diddy’sappearance is tentative, we are going to have a voter education rally whetherhe shows up or not,” Scriven said. The individuals who are scheduled at theevent are Senator Mary Landrieu, Senator Melvin “Kip” Holden, Senator CleoFields, Oliver Thomas and State Representative Sharon Weston-Broome.
Scriven statedthat many volunteers helped with creating this project.
“I have a hostof volunteers helping me and they are truly wonderful,” she said. “These areregular students who are interested in the voting process.”
Simmie JohnsonJr. a junior majoring in business management from Bastrop is one of thevolunteers.
“I think it’sgood to get the word out by using renowned African Americans,” he said.
