The Southern University men’s crosscountry team victoriously captured a perfect score of 15 points in the 5.2 milerace at Alabama A&M University on Oct. 9, in Huntsville, Ala.
This is the first time in theSouthern’s cross country history that the team has swept a race with fiverunners placing in the top five spots of a meet.
“Right now they are in mid-seasonform,” Southern head coach Johnny Thomas said. “But there are still many teams that we have to beat. Our freshman team is getting stronger,and we have great leadership from the upperclassmen. They are taking them inand accepting them and working cohesively. They are probably one of the most intelligent groups thatI’ve worked with so far as track and cross country.”
The Jaguar men’s team topped suchschools as Dillard University (37), Xavier University (53) and the Bulldogs(80).
“They put in an honest effort,” saidthe Jags’ assistant coach Charles Moon. ”But I know that they’re capable of doing better we still need to run asa complete team.”
Jag’s sophomore Erik Henneghan ledthe pack by coming in with a time of 27:11.23 for first place, followed byjunior Darnell Parker at 27:27.48, freshman Kristopher Watson finished28:16.98, junior Anthony Lee came in fourth with 28:20.62, and freshman LandanGibson rounded out the top five with 28:21.09.
“We feel confident that we cancontend with the rest of our conference,” Parker the Jags’ team captain said.
The Lady Jaguars finished in secondplace overall with 56 points. Southern senior Erikka Thomas came in the 3.2 mile run at second19:05.25followed by junior Francella Williams with third 20:18.01. Xavier University women came in firstplace with 33 and Alabama A&M finished with 56 points.
The Jaguars will head to NicholsState University in Thibodeaux for the next match on Saturday afternoon.
