Wearing weave is not a decision women make based solely on a lack of hair it is also used to help hair grow and obtain various styles.
“Women wear weave to portray a certain look or image. People just like to be versatile,” said Dionne Allen a sophomore majoring in psychology from LaPlace.
“We don’t like to have the same hair style at all times. If it takes adding hair to create that look then that’s just what we have to do.”
Some women choose not to wear weave, because they feel better wearing their own hair, “I like to wear my hair straight. I don’t wear weave. It’s not my style,” said Brandy Bradford, a junior majoring in political science from Houston.
Men have different opinions when it comes to how they feel about women wearing weave.
Roy Stewart, a junior majoring in secondary education from Plaquemine said an entertainer that he would say is beautiful is R&B singer Beyond’ Knowles, who is known for her long hair and even longer hair weaves.
“She looks good with weave but she would look good without it also. When it comes to weave it depends on how you look.
If you need it, go ahead and get it, but if you don’t then wear your own,” Stewart said.
Some women choose to wear weave just to obtain a certain trend that is in style.
“Weave provides a different look or style, but a lot of people get it just because everyone else has it,” said Angelia Leblanc a senior majoring in criminal justice from Darrow.
The wearing of weave may solely be a women’s decision, but the feelings of their mate may also have to be taken into consideration
“I would prefer to have a girl who wears her own hair, so I can run my fingers through it without it getting stuck in a track,” said Seth Watson, a senior majoring in Electrical Engineering from New Orleans.
Although some women may be able to wear their own hair without problems, they still wear it for the purpose of keeping there own hair healthy. “I prefer to wear my hair straight down.
I just wear weave to grow my hair out so that I can wear my own,” said Mesha Whitaker, a freshman majoring in biology from Houston.
Smith-Brown Memorial Union beauty salon stylist said, “I think a lot of the students are going back to wearing there own hair. There are quite a few that get weave put in when they come to the salon but the majority are wearing there own hair.”
Even though some men may prefer women to wear their own hair, with others it is not a problem.
Michael Hollins, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering from Denver said,
“It doesn’t matter to me as long as it’s not ridiculous and they keep it on point.”
