The Southern University baseball team (2-1) will finish a three-game home stand when they face Nicholls State University baseball team on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lee-Hines Field.
Southern head coach Roger Cador said the game, along with a March 2 game against Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond will be used as a “tune-up” for his pitching staff.
“Well, we are trying to align our pitchers to see who we can depend on,” said Cador. “We are going to try and have three or four pitchers in the game so that we can get ready for SWAC play. We are going to have to reach and get a better feel of who’s going to be placed in the rotation.”
Last Saturday, Southern faced Olive Harvey Junior College (Chicago) and a hiatus of nearly two weeks did not stop Southern University baseball freshman first baseman Demetrius Myles from going 4-for-5 with five runs batted in during the Jags’ 25-1 win over the Panthers.
“He’s a hardworking, determined young man who has a wonderful approach to hitting,” Cador said. “He’s can be our ‘poster boy’ in helping other players become better hitters.”
Three Jags hit homers in the rout over Oliver Harvey and 15 players got at least one hit in the game.
Olive Harvey scored their only run in the top of the eighth inning when third baseman Angel Cinton scored off a single by first baseman Wilton Girbatt.
