As Valentine’s Day approaches, lovers everywhere tend to listen to more love songs to get them ready for a day of romance.
From R&B crooner Lenny Williams to the “ladies man” Teddy Pendergrass, Southern University students have different views on what is considered to be the ideal loves song.
On a survey listing 20 songs, students voted Luther Vandross’ rendition of “Always and Forever” as the number one love song. Vandross’ “Here and Now” and Beyonce’s “Dangerously in Love” rounded out the top three.
“When I hear “Always and Forever” by Luther Vandross, I get excited,” said April Green, a senior majoring in therapeutic recreation from LaPlace. Anything Luther puts out is a hit. I just close my eyes and drift away.”
Love songs have the power to touch a person’s soul.
Lionel Joseph, a senior majoring in microbiology from Independence said his favorite love song is “Ribbon in the Sky” by Stevie Wonder.
“The song is so powerful. I can’t explain it, whatever it is, its love. I feel love when I hear that song,” said Joseph.
People also use love songs to relate to situations that they are currently going through or to reflect on the past. Listening to certain love songs can also reignite old feelings.
“When it comes to “Dangerously in Love” by Beyonce’, I know I’ve felt like that for someone before and it just reminds me of that person,” said Brittany Beasley, a junior majoring in Psychology from Littleton, Colo.
“When I hear “For You” by Kenny Latimore, I feel a rekindled love for my ex-girlfriend,” said Adam Nelson, a senior majoring in therapeutic recreation from Westwego.
There are a million different love songs that will be played on the radio, television and personal stereo systems around the world this weekend. Hopefully, your favorite song will be playing somewhere on Valentine’s Day.
