Craig S. Carter, a spring 2003graduate of Southern University, majoring in mass communications with aconcentration in broadcast, recently finished his first independent film, DaBlock Party.
Carter not only edited the film butwas also a consultant for the movie and the assistant director.
A preview of the film was displayedto millions while watching an episode of BET’s College Hill, when Delano Mitchell, a castmember was shown starring in the film.
Da Block Party is about a young man whose olderbrother would usually hold a block party the last day of the summer, but wasrecently killed.
His younger brother decides that hewants to keep the legacy going but the only problem that he has, is that hedoesn’t have any money. So, throughout the movie, he has to go through alltypes of obstacles, including having baby mama drama, getting the money for theparty and having to always look over his shoulders for the cops.
Carter felt that since he was ableto get in the movie making business, that it was time to give back to hisuniversity.
“I want to get people here to givethe students an outlet that want to work in the movie business”, said Carter.
He wants to create a film festivalhere at Southern to allow students to show off their hard work and talent.Maverick Entertainment will release Da Block Party in all of the video chains onNovember 11 of this year.
Carter is working on and is soonlooking to release two more movies Black Saturday and Get Yours.
”If you want to get something out of life with your degree,you have to go out and get it. It won’t come to you,” Carter said.
