The Southern University baseballteam will host the Prairie View A&M Panthers at Lee-Hines Field on Saturdayand Sunday, with doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on both days.
The Jags (11-6 overall, 9-2Southwestern Athletic Conference) are coming off a four-game sweep, includingan 18-4 win over the Grambling State Tigers (7-14 overall, 3-9 SWAC) lastweekend.
The last time Southern and thePanthers (20-4 overall, 9-3 SWAC) met was in April 2003, when the Jags sweptPVAMU during a four-game visit to The Bluff. Southern defeated the Panthers bya combined score of 44-5 in the sweep.
But the Jags, who head coach RogerCador considers as “young,” are going up a Panthers’ squad that has performed acomplete turnaround. They have already doubled last season’s wins with 20 gamesunder head coach Michael Robertson this season.
However, Southern’s wins againsttheir in-state rivals last weekend should keep the momentum going for what issure to be a premier match up in the western division of the conference.Although Cador’s choice of who the starting pitcher on Saturday will be isstill “up in the air,” he said that senior Corey Poret (0-3, 6.75 ERA) willprobably start in at least one of the four games.
“It’s not really important to me whostarts,” Cador said. “It is important for the team to realize that as players, they sometimes have to know their roles.”
