Two SouthernUniversity students were chosen by the Council for the Development of French inLouisiana (CODOFIL) to receive scholarships to study abroad.
Juniors MarcelGailes and Latasha Griffen willtake part in a three-week summer immersion program from July 5 to July 23 atthe Universite’ de Lie’ge in Lie’ge, in Belgium. The scholarship was provided by the French communityof Belgium.
The scholarshipincludes tuition, on-campus lodging, medical insurance, meals and someexcursions. Approximately 50 applicants applied for the award from all over thestate to CODOFIL for 20 available scholarships, six students applied from SU.
“I feelexcited, I really didn’t think I was going to get it, but since I did I feelreally honored,” Gailes, a food nutrition major and French minorsaid.
The last timethat someone from Southern received the scholarship was in 2000.
“Marceland Latasha are two very deserving French students . They are two excellent students and they also work very hardin the department with activities that promote foreign language studies,”said Linda Lassiter, Department of Foreign Languages chairperson.
The onlyexpense that Griffen and Gails has to pay for is airfare. Because of theexpensive cost of tickets, the foreign language department will be raffling offa Cajun basket March 29-April 2 for a $1 in T.T. Allain.
“I want toimprove my speech and conversational skills, also my French altogether,”Griffen, a Biology and French major said. ”Because I plan on going back.”
