After two games in the 2003 football season, the Southern University Jaguars football team (1-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference, 2-0 overall) has outscored its opponents 91-7. On Saturday, 62 of those points contributed to that SWAC leading statistic.
Southern scored its most points against an opponent in Saturday’s 62-7 thrashing of the Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-2 SWAC, 0-2 overall) and coincidentally, the last time they reached such a milestone was against the same team in 2000, beating the Panthers 56-6.
The game started with a 34-point Southern jumpstart in the first half. At 12:14, Jags senior wide receiver Drayton Bridges started the scoring binge with a 14-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Quincy Richard.
After a sack on Panthers’quarterback Michael Hill by junior defensive lineman Kevin Mack, junior running back Kenneth Peoples scored on the first of three touchdown runs. After a series of lethargic offensive plays by Prairie View, Richard threw another touchdown pass to senior wide out Chris Davis.
Although the extra point attempt failed on the first scoring drive, the 20-point lead in the first quarter had the Jags sailing through regulation with only one glitch-a Panthers’ score in the second quarter. But Panthers freshman running back Alex Porterie’s two-yard touchdown run did nothing to stifle the Jags momentum.
“That score was luck,” said Mack. “Although I was not surprised by the way we played, we should have scored more against them.”
The next scoring drive by Southern ended with a one yard touchdown run by senior running back Leon Miller halfway through the second quarter and an interception by true freshman defensive back Jarmaul George led him to the end zone untouched 39 yards later.
In addition to George’s take-back, the Jags forced two fumbles and another interception Saturday. Prairie View’s quarterbacks were sacked three times, including one by senior defensive back Lenny Williams.
“Usually, a defensive back doesn’t get a sack,” said Williams. “But Coach (Richardson) sent me in on a blitz and I was fortunate to get a sack.”
Williams finished the game with eight tackles (four solo), one deflection and the sack.
In the second half, Peoples scored his other two touchdowns in the third quarter; one was a 12-yard run and a 20-yard rush. In addition, the Winston-Salem transfer finished the game with 131 yards.
In the fourth quarter, senior rusher Trevin Griffin earned his first touchdown of his collegiate career rushing 20 yards into the end zone at the 10:34 mark. Seven minutes later, senior running back Gerald Holmes 2-yard run capped off the profuse scoring that left Prairie View with two marks in the loss column.
Southern ended the game with 531 total offensive yards and Richard passed for 186 yards, completing 11 of 13 throws. The Jags are now atop the SWAC’s western division standings, followed closely behind by Texas Southern University. They also have two wins.
