The Mocha Room in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, blazes every Wednesday from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. when poets showcase their ability on the open mic.
All poets are limited to two poems and 20 or more poets bless the mic each Wednesday night.
“I love to hear what is on people’s minds. Poetry is a way for others to take a look through your eyes,” said Candice Kaufman a junior majoring in animal science from Denver.
James Walker, also known as P.I.M.P. (Perpetual Imbariable Majestic Poet) hosts this event. P.I.M.P. has been hosting the open mic for two years and poetry nights have been going on for at least ten.
The opportunity to host open mic was given to P.I.M.P. because he was always speaking in the Mocha Room.
The Mocha Room has established many individuals as poets on Southern University’s campus.
“I feel like spoken word is a revolution that began with our generation, which is generation X, ” said Sam Williams, a junior majoring in psychology from Hammond.
There are also opportunities for poets to compete in the poetry slam, which is a competition, where each poet has three minutes and ten seconds to express their thoughts.
“Everybody’s welcome. We encourage everyone to share their thought that’s what keeps it going on,” said Walker, a senior majoring in electronic engineering technology from Donaldsonville.
If you are an established or even an inspiring poet, make your talent known on Wednesdays in the Mocha Room.
