The Southern University men and women’s tennis teams suffered losses last weekend in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship.
Held at Quillian Stadium in Seattle, the first round of the women’s championship delivered a sweeping loss to the Lady Jags (13-13). Hometown favorites and six seeded University of Washington (18-3) defeated the 2003 Southwestern Athletic Conference Champions 4-0.
“We came to play, but Washington did also,” said Jeff Conyers, men and women’s tennis head coach. ” They just simply outplayed us.”
In New Orleans, at the Goldring Tennis Center, the men suffered the same fate as they loss in the first round to the Green Wave of Tulane University (20-5) 4-0.
The closest Southern (11-16) came to winning one of the six singles match played was in the six and final match. Jags tennis player Michael Date did not let Tulane’s Patrizio Maucci win easily as Date succumbed to defeat 6-2, 6-4.
