On the introduction track of Key Players-Volume 2, The Movement. The Overtake, the one who calls himself G.T. said that he put his heart and soul into this CD and that he has a lot on the line. What a thin line he must have drawn.
What he calls a good dose of the Dirty South is just a good dose of plain old dirt.
The album which is a collaboration of tracks produced by the Houston homeboy G.T. and Dallas native Steve Nice is a South Texas-hailed production featuring the likes of Lil’ Flip, Bun B. of U.G.K., Tela , E.S.G. and Slim Thug-among others.
The second track I Can’t Wait teases the audience with hooks sung by Montina that sends the listener back to the old school. Bun B. starts off on the track, but it quickly falls off after he is finished.
The third selection I Need a Sweet, is souring and after going down the list of tracks, satisfaction can be found in “This is for My,” which features E.S.G., Slim Thug and T-2.
Flowing on beats that are laced with Pac-Man video game music, this single track is why people don’t buy complete CD’s. When there is only one good song to listen to, Kazaa and other download web sites come in mighty handy.
The 11th track, Mission, rescues the remainder of the album with a drifting beat that one can cruise to when going down their in their respective ‘hood. One could almost pretend to be “Filmore Slim” or even “Goldie” after listening to this track. Tela’s contribution makes the song even more believable.
Memphis’ own 8-Ball donates his touch of Space Age Pimpin’ to the track Keep It Gansta, which features Cl’che. With all due respect to the pimp game, the certified pimp does not pimp nearly hard enough on this track for it to be certified gansta. Besides, in these times, keeping it gansta is no longer an option, but a necessity in the rap game.
Conclusively, if you are able to listen to the remaining tracks, then you are either one of two things: high or deaf. The few tracks that are endurable really stand out on an album that seems to be 20% substance and 80% made while smoking illegal substances.
Buy the CD if you want, but this is one time that downloading has this listener’s vote.
