United States Representative Richard Baker, a senior member of the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee will give a special seminar on Women in Finance, Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Louisiana Public Broadcasting, located at 7733 Perkins Road.
Baker feels that women of today need to know how to handle their finances for tomorrow.
“It’s a simple fact that women live longer than men, often far outliving their husbands and because of this we all need to take seriously the more sobering facts that women on average spend less of their lifetime in the workplace,” said Baker. “Which translates into lower income and retirement savings, and consequently are less likely to receive a pension and can expect and receive less by way of Social Security benefits.”
According to the Women’s Institue for Financial Education, women live six years longer than men, over 75 percent are widowed by the age of 56 and a woman’s average monthly Social Security benefit is $756, compared to $985 for men.
The conference will include several panel discussions on insurance, credit and homebuying. Their will also be experts available speaking on how to secure small-business loans and how critical it is that college students understand creditor jargon.
“The purpose of this conference is to inform and empower people with regard to a full range of their financial choices that can have a significant impact on their lives,” said Baker.
The conference is free and open to the public. For more information please contact Michael DiResto at 225-929-7711.
