Amid rumor and speculation the 2002 football schedule has finally been finalized.
The Jaguars are scheduled to play a total of 12 games, five to be held in A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Since the conclusion of last season there have been rumors regarding where the Bayou Classic would be held, whether or not the Jaguars would take on the Tigers of Tennessee State University, a member of the Ohio Valley athletic conference in the year 2002.
“After all the speculation, I am very pleased that were able to come up with a quality schedule,” said Southern head football coach Pete Richardson.
Fan favorites such as the always anticipated contest between the Jaguars and the Florida A&M University Rattlers have been replaced with some newer faces such as Nicholls State University and Miles College.
With the addition of Alcorn State to the schedule last week, the 2002 season was set.
“We are very pleased that we were able to add another quality game to our schedule,” said Floyd Kerr, Athletic Director.
The Jaguars who finished the 2001 season with a 7-4 record, 5-2 in the Southwestern Athletic conference, will open the season against Tulane University in the Big Easy Classic, August 31 in the Louisiana Superdome.
The Jaguars are scheduled to travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Shreveport to take on Northwestern State University; Houston and Indianapolis, Ind., to take on Alabama A&M University in the Circle City Classic.
