BATON ROUGE, LA – Although the Southern University women’s basketball found themselves down by as many as 15 in their contest against the Lady Tigers of Jackson State, they refused to give up, as they come back from an eleven point deficit going into the second half to defeat Jackson State 57-47.
“We were sitting back,” Pugh said. “We had to get out and get in some passing lanes. The one thing I can say about these kids is when we push up full court and get the pressure and energy going, it tends to carry over into the offensive end.”
Up until Monday night, the Jaguars (9-3 overall, 4-0 SWAC) preferred to a 2-2-1 defense, switching to a 1-2-1-1 trap allowed to Jaguars use the element of surprise to create turnovers.
“That’s probably the first time we ran that 1-2-1-1 trap since I’ve been at Southern,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said. “We always ran it at Meridian (Miss., Community College), but here we’ve pretty much run the 2-2-1. Everybody expects us to play it. I thought it was a big benefit for us. We got some turnovers out of it, and it rattled them in terms of their rhythm and their half-court set. We definitely had to stretch the game out, because in the half court they were just meticulous and getting high-percentage shots.”
Southern University who is currently on a seven-game winning streak.
The Jaguars outscored the Jaguars 44-18 in the final 21 minutes of the game bringing the game to an end. Jaguar victory 57-47.
Jacklyn Winfield led the Jaguars with 22 points while Tammy Bullock added14 points and eight rebounds.
The next home contest for the Jaguars women’s team is a Saturday, January 19, 2002, at 5:30 p.m., against Alabama A&M.
