Roman Banks, formerly the men’s assistant basketball coach has been relieved of his duties pertaining to the men’s basketball team. Roman Banks, who had been with the team for the past six seasons, was reassigned to the admissions department, early last week.
First-year assistant coach Otis Hughley is now head coach Ben Jobe’s only assistant.
When former head coach Tommy Green was fired in mid-March, he left behind two assistants, Banks and Vinson Metcalf, whose contract was not renewed.
“I have no ill feelings,” said Banks, who said he still holds aspirations of becoming a collegiate head coach. “For some reason, my chemistry didn’t blend with Jobe’s.
“Happiness is more important. It was time for me to move. This is the right thing for both of us. Southern’s been good to me.”
Under head coach Ben Jobe, Banks found his duties become less and less strenuous, his last role with the team being administrative assistant, taking care of the team’s paperwork.
“It was a 365-degree turn from what I was doing,” said Banks. “It got to the point where I wasn’t doing anything on the floor,”
Jobe has no immediate plans to find a replacement during the remainder of this season.
