The Southern University men’s basketball team took two more defeats in a season that has been full of loses.
The Jaguars (2-14, 2-6) were embarrassed by the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (6-6, 3-3) 82-68 and suffered a close loss to the Alabama State Hornets.
The Bulldogs forced Southern to turn the ball over 26 times while scoring 34 points off the turnovers. The Jaguars shot a miserable 37 percent from the field and 28% from 3-point range. The Bulldogs were lead in scoring by Anthony Hayes with 15 points and Gerik Nicholson with 13. The leading scorers for the Jaguars were Victor Tarver with 20 points followed by Nicholas Egland with 13.
“We let them dictate the tempo of the game, they were extremely aggressive”, said Ben Jobe.
“We don’t have the depth to play aggressive defense and offense,” added Jobe.
On Tuesday January 22 the Jags hosted the only team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with an overall winning record (11-7, 6-1). In a game expected to be a lopsided victory for the Hornets the Jaguars played one of their best games of the season losing 67-57.
The Jaguars hung in the game playing with energy and emotion that seemed to run out late in the second half.
Leading 31-30 at the half time the Hornets and Jags exchanged baskets until ASU went on an 11-0 run and began to open the game up.
The Jaguars fought back behind Tim Johnson who scored all seven of his points in the final 11 minutes of the second half. Johnson cut the lead to one point at 51-52 at the 8:50 with a spectacular open court dunk. A three-point play by ASU’s Tyrone Levett followed by two baskets by Alvin Pettway put the game out of reach for the Jaguars.
For the Jaguars Tarver scored 14 followed by 13 from DeAndre Bell, eight from Egland and seven from Brian Johnson.
