The winning continued for the Southern University women’s basketball team as they defeated Grambling State 80-67 last Saturday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. The win, Southern’s sixth in a row, improves their overall record to 9-3 and 3-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
“They were ready to play,” head coach Sandy Pugh said. “They did some wonderful things early.”
The Jaguars’ defensive effort was the story of the first half. Just seconds after Angela Bullock scored the first points of the game; Jacklyn Winfield stole the ball from Shrieka Evans and dished it to Tommie Walden for a lay-up with 19:11 left in the half. Winfield got a second steal and took it in herself for the easy score to give Southern an early 6-0 lead with 18:58 left in the first half. Southern went on to outscore Grambling 16-5 over the first six minutes of the game. The Jaguars capitalized on 12 Tiger turnovers for 19 points en route to a 47-30 halftime lead.
The Tigers rallied early in the second half, going on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to 47-43 with 14:36 remaining in the game. Southern responded by outscoring Grambling 13-2, capped off by Winfield driving in the lane and hitting the runner with 9:53 remaining in the game for a 60-45 lead.
” I knew they were going to have a hard run at us the first five minutes,” said Pugh. “I teach momentum swings all the time.”
The Jaguars thwarted another Tiger rally late in the game and went on to win 80-67.
Winfield led all scorers with 32 points while snatching six steals in the game. Tommie Walden added 12 points while Tammy Bullock pitched in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern puts their six-game winning streak into a Monday night home contest against Jackson State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
