Earlier this summer, the 9th District U.S. Court of Appeals ruled the words “…under God,” in the pledge of allegiance to be a violation of our constitutional rights, in particular our freedom of religion.
The basis of the ruling being together the words, ” … one Nation, under God…,” says to the world that the United States of America is a nation UNDER God, not under Vishnu, Jesus, Buddha, or under no god, but under God … as in God, the father of Jesus.
The words, which were added to the pledge in 1954, are supposedly in contradiction with our right to serve any person or thing we want or the right to serve no one or nothing.
What is next? Are they going to burn and do away with all U.S. currency, most of which is inscribed with the words “In God we trust?” Is spending U.S. money a violation of our rights as citizens of the United States.
When being sworn in as a witness, will we not place our hand on the bible and ask GOD for help?
Now as far as my feelings on the subject go, I do not say the pledge of allegiance, because I do not feel I should pledge allegiance (loyalty) to a country that usually does not pledge allegiance to me.
But, to go as far as to say that those two words are a violation of my rights is a bit much. I do understand that some who do not believe in anything or anyone may feel that the United States is trying to push their monotheistic Judeo-Christian views upon the nation, but I really do not see that to be the case, the words are meant to unite the multitude of cultures and people that make up the population of the United States of America.
With all that is going on the world today, I should think that we as Americans should want some things to stay intact as a reminder of slightly simpler times.
I also feel that if you do not agree with something, do not participate in it, I do not agree with the pledge, so I do not say it, it’s that simple. You do not have to do what you do not want to do.
So instead of fighting the courts and breaking traditions, why not exercise our right not to do anything.
