Dear Editor:
Inquiring SU Alumnus Want to Know!
What has happened to our university? As an alumnus of Southern University, and member of the class 1985, I am totally appalled at some of the things I have seen and heard about our university. I love my university and I always will be loyal until the dear end because I bleed blue and gold but inquiring alumnus want to know:
1. Why were classes cancelled for three days?
2. Why does Miss Southern wear the opponent’s school color at football games? (example: the Nicholls State she wore gray when the class queens had on a pretty royal blue?)
3. Why are the SU Dancing Dolls still doing the same routine at every game since the 2001 football season?
4. Where’s that good ole Southern spirit in the student section?
5. Why won’t the cheerleaders pay closer attention to the game instead of the band so that they can dance? The cheerleaders seem to do very few cheers that really get the fans involved. The team has to pump up the crowd during crucial plays.
6. Do you find it odd that the big bugs (Cicadas) that were flying through the air and landing on the students was more exciting than the game?
Inquiring SU Alumnus want to know!
Lyn Milner – Class of 1985
Thank you for voicing your opinion on the things that you have observed on our campus. We do appreciate feedback especially from our beloved alumni. As I read your questions I thought that it would only be appropriate to go to the sources to address your concerns.
School cancelled. We were out of school for several days over the past two weeks in anticipation of two dangerous storms that were predicted to cause major damage to our area. As a precautionary measure, the Chancellor cancelled school so that students who were able to return to their families had the opportunity to do so. Also, if an emergency were to arise, it would’ve made it easier for university officials to evacuate students who remained on campus without the interference of commuter students.
Miss Southern’s infamous gray suit. Each week our Miss Southern and her court dresses very exquisitely and with distinct taste. As far as the Nicholls State game, Erica wore a beautiful gray suit that complemented the royal blue outfits of her court. As Miss Southern, she can choose to wear whatever she wants. There is no written rule that states that she must always wear blue and gold. To my understanding, she and her court selects outfits for the entire season during the summer and I think that it is nice to see them in a variety of colors and styles instead of the standard blue and gold. As long as Erica and her court continues to represent our university with the utmost sophistication and style, we can care less what color she wears.
Dancing Dolls. I couldn’t find out an answer to your question on the Dancing Dolls halftime performance and a lot of people are wondering the same thing. However, I can say that our Dancing Dolls are the most talented and classiest dancers in the country hands down. No matter what people may say about them, they actually dance.
Lack of School Spirit. Ms. Milner, I took that one personally. The way we do things aren’t the same as they may have been done during your tenure here. We are very proud of this great institution and all things within it. Not only do we represent our school, we represent our classes, fraternities, sororities, clubs, department with the great enthusiasm. We have had only one home game this season, so you can’t honestly judge our loyalty. We may be 1-5 but I guarantee you the students will continue to pack the stadium each week to cheer our football team to victory.
Cheerleaders. At Southern University we have one of the best cheerleading squads in the country. If you sit on the student side, you will witness their spirit-filled cheers and performance of difficult stunts to hype the crowd up. The band only complements their performance. No matter how ugly the scoreboard looks, I can guarantee you that you will see bright smiles on each of their faces.
Flying insects. Who cares?
I hope that I answered all of your questions.
