Last Saturday night’s game against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University may have been “just another game” according to head women’s basketball coach Sandy Pugh.
But for Southern University the 77-55 victory over the Lady Braves, represented something more. It represented yet another milestone in Southern University women’s basketball history. It represented the women’s first victory over Alcorn since the 1999-basketball season.
“Alcorn as a whole talks so much trash,” said Micheal Green, a senior majoring in political science from Long Beach, California. “It felt so good to shut them up.”
Once again Southern’s dynamic duo Jacklyn Winfield and Cherise Sims proved to be too much for yet another Southwestern Athletic Conference team. Jacklyn Winfield further solidified her position as the seventh leading scorer in the nation, as she led all scorers with 28 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Sims finished the night with 15 points going 3-4 from three-point range.
Tremesha Colbert the 5’10 junior forward from McGehee, Arkansas added 11 rebounds-six offensive, five defensive, to the winning effort.
“Once again Jackie and Cherise got in there and did what they had to do…That along with Tremesha bringing down the boards won the game,” said Pugh.
Leading Alcorn in their attempt to overcome the Jaguars were Tnonealyer Powers with 16 points and six rebounds and Tosin Fadeyi with 12 points and seven rebounds.
A twenty-two-point win over the defending SWAC championship would be a great accomplishment for any team. But, for the Jaguars the game and the performance of the team was a great disappointment for Coach Pugh. The Jaguars allowed the Lady Braves to make it the foul line 26 times making 19.
“I was very disappointed…We did too much watching and waiting for Jackie to score,” said Pugh. “But, overall we did what we set out to do…We forced them to doubt their ability to win.”
The Jaguar women, who are well on their way to a “perfect” conference record, are now looking towards a championship title.
“I have never won a SWAC champions…The girls have never won a SWAC championship,” said Pugh. “And we will not rest or be satisfied until we do so.”
The Jaguar women will take to the court again Saturday, February 2, against the Lady Tigers of Grambling State University, in Grambling, La. at 5:30 p.m.
