A road trip for the Southern University basketball program, saw the men’s basketball team gain one over the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University and drop a 61-57 to the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champions, Alabama State University.
Saturday, February 16, the Jaguars (7-17 overall, 5-9 SWAC) defeated the Bulldogs (14-8, 9-5 SWAC) 82-80. The Bulldogs are currently ranked third in the SWAC.
Leading the Jaguars to victory were Carl Alexander and Nicholas Egland. Alexander finished the night with 25 points and four rebounds. Egland earned 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Leading Alabama A&M through their defeat were Desmond Cambridge with 27 points and three assists and Nigel Moore with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Jaguars victory was locked down by a buzzer-beating tip-in by Tim Johnson, who contributed five points to the event.
Johnson’s shot was ruled good by one official sending the team to the locker-room victorious, only to be called back to floor when another official ruled the shot no good.
After reviewing the replay monitors in vain, the shot stood as good.
“The only thing I could do was go to the boards and get a tip-in,” Tim Johnson said. “When I saw the official throw his hand down, it was time to go. We won the game.”
The controversial win marked the Jaguars sixth win of the season and head coach Ben Jobe’s 200th victory at Southern.
“Skinny Dog put it in the bucket,” said Jobe. “I could not hear the horn. I just watched the ref.”
Monday night in Montgomery, Alabama,, the Hornets of Alabama State University barely held on in their three-point win over the Jaguars, in the Joe L. Reed Acadome.
“We had a good run…We are definitely improving,” said Jobe.
Leading the Jaguars were Carl Alexander, with 19 points, including two four-point plays in the first half. Victor Tarver added 14 points and eight assists.
For the Hornets, Alvin Pettway led with 14 points. Malcolm Campbell added 11, and Keith Gamble and Tyrone Levett had 10 points apiece. Levett added 11 rebounds.
Next up for the Jaguars are the Braves of Alcorn State University, Saturday, February 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Alcorn.
