The Southern University College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences hosted its Annual Awards and Recognition Banquet Monday, April 22 in the Smith Brown Memorial Union Cotillion Ballroom.
The college gave 54 awards to students and faculty for the highest G.P.A., distinguished service, excellence and club leadership. Thirty-nine awards were also given to teachers in Head Start, a program for students with children.
“These types of ceremonies are important to this department because it doesn’t get as much recognition as the others. It also gives students motivation to work harder,” said Matthew Harrison a junior in the Computer Science Department from Lacombe.
Undrea Hardaway, a graduate from Southern University’s college of Agricultural Sciences, inspired students and faculty to “develop into tomorrow’s leaders.”
Carla Alexander received four awards including the highest G.P.A in the college, Student Organization, Clothing Textiles and Related Arts and Designers of Tomorrow Club Awards.
“Nothing but hard work. I can do all things through Christ. I’m striving toward a goal and after I reach that one I will strive for another one,” said Alexander, a senior in Interior Design from Trinidad.
Many students left inspired and encouraged by the college. “In my college you get support. Persons like Orlando Phelps and Dr. Don Patin welcomed me and made my experience at Southern a very positive one because they went beyond the call of duty to ensure my success,” said Java Jackson a sophomore Agricultural Economics major from Mississippi.
For over ten years Ceola Beauchamp, student service coordinator and project promotions specialists, has organized the awards banquet. “This program is to inspire and recognize faculty, staff and students who have worked very hard.”
Dr. Kirkland Melland, dean of agricultural and consumer sciences believes this ceremony was better than the previous ones. “Every year gets bigger and better, we want to make sure we touch more and more students.”
