Herman Hartman, Jr. of Morgan City and member of the Southern University football team was selected to represent Southern at the 2002 National Collegiate Athletic Association Foundation Leadership Conference.
The conference will be held May 26-30 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
In addition to Hartman, Tremesha Colbert of the women’s basketball team. Rickie Weeks, second baseman for the Jaguar baseball team and softball player Tess Turner were nominated for the honor.
“We chose the four students who we felt were the top returning athletes possessing leadership qualities,” said Deborah Paul, compliance officer for SU Athletics.
Hartman, who is the son of former women’s basketball coach Herman Hartman, was chosen from a pool of 1183 students nominated from 296 institutions. The six-feet 185-pound junior plays defensive back for the Jaguars.
“Herman seems to have the qualities needed to be a good leader. He wants to help improve the lives of student-athletes on this campus.”
The mission of the conference is to provide a diverse group of the nation’s top student athletes the opportunity to participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will help them become better leaders on their teams and campuses.
The conference involves up to 350 student-athletes representing Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from all over the country.
Southern University own Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meets monthly to inform its members of changes to the NCAA’s code of conduct. The committee consists of athlete representing all of Southern’s athletic teams.
After being nominated by their respective schools the nominees’ applications are reviewed by a panel of nine who rank each person by the strength of their personal statement in demonstrating their desire and capacity to lead and their commitment to service and leadership.
