The Southern University track and field program has been very busy this past week. As well as preparing for this weekend’s wit 43rd Annual Pelican Relays, last weekend the Jaguars competed in the 75th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays one of the largest meet in the nation.
There were over 4500 athletes in attendance, including athletes from high schools, colleges, universities and Olympians all of whom had to qualify to participate in this meet.
Head coach Johnny Thomas took his most talented athletes 20 men and one girl. Brian Johnson, who had a previous time of 10.23 in the 100-meter dash, finished last with a time of 10.53. In the long jump Johnson place third jumping a 25-04.5
This weekend will give SU a chance to redeem themselves at their very own Pelican Relays.
Last year Grambling State gave the men a run for their money, as the Jaguars barely edged them out of first place with a score of 56-50.
The women also had a tough time winning by only one point, beating Alcorn State 56-55.
The Pelican Relays will be held a Roscoe Moore Track in A.W. Mumford Stadium, April 12 and 13. The events are scheduled to begin at noon both days.
