May 10th is coming so quick for some at Southern University, but not soon enough for others. Yet many students are confused as to the next step they should take after they cross that stage.
Many students feel that continuing their education is the best option since the economy is in limbo. However, students should develop themselves in order become marketable in the job world. Students should know their limitations and capabilities or strengths and weaknesses.
Although it is hard for some students to see where they want to be in the future, they should have some idea in regards to the career path they are going to take in the future. Many students choose their majors without giving proper thought and by the end of their college career, they realize the chosen major is not one of interest.
It is a vague concept to think that life will be great after college because of a degree. There are many students without a job even after they graduate. Students need to understand that college alone will not give them the experience they need to compete in the job market. Some counselors encourage students to take part in as many internships as possible before they graduate even if it means postponing graduation.
Post secondary education, such as graduate school, law school or any other type of schooling, may prolong students from entering the job market.
“It is not the best idea to enter grad school without some kind of work experience,” states Katrice Albert, marketing professor. “Students need to know that companies will not delegate responsibilities to someone right out of college with no experience.”
However, there are a number of counselors that do not help students find their path or evaluate them accurately prior to graduation. Therefore, it is the students’ responsibility to determine where they are and what they need to do to ensure a smooth graduation process.
Graduating from college with a degree is just a lot of talk especially if a student earns pay by doing something that does not coincide with the degree.
