SU track and field team spent their spring break working hard at the 41st ExxonMobil Ty Terrell Relay March 29-30 in Beaumont, Texas at Lamar University. Many of Southern University’s runners went out and showed that a little extra hard work goes a long way.
“Lamar was a fun meet however it revealed a lot of things about our team we were able to do, a lot things about people that have not been able to help us this year until dance,” said Southern head coach Johnny Thomas.
The women’s performance improved this week all around. In the 100-meter dash Erica Lattin placed fifth with a time of 12.14 second and in the 200-meter dash Lattin placed third with time of 24.76. Vanessa Young had her best performance of the year Young running the 200 in 25. and in the 400 meter she ran 1 minute 41 seconds. Latoya Johnson placed second in the 400 with a time of 57.89. In the 800-meter Kenya Warren ran 2 minutes 23.06 seconds and Erikka Thomas ran a 2:23.81. 100-meter hurdles Francella Williams placed second with a time of 14.05 seconds, in the 400 hurdles Williams placed first clocking in at 3:54.93.
“I was very pleaseed with the girls team because they have come a long way especially with the leadership of Kenya Warren,” said Coach Thomas
The women relays teams did well placing third in the 4×100 with a time of 47.58 seconds and coming in first in the 4×400 with 3:54.93 time.
In the high jump, Felicia Gray jumped 5-6 and Keshanna Bridges 5-2, taking second and third place respectively . In the shot-put Rochelle Knigthen placed second throwing 43-6, Nina Gray placed fourth, and Silvers Fultz placed fifth. Carole Mitchell threw 107-11 placing sixth with the best threw for Southern.
In the javelin the women took third through sixth place, Gray had the best throw with a 131-06 throw taking third place.
Many of SU men came out to this meet to prove themselves for the first time this year. Brain Johnson broke a meet record in the 100 with a time of 10.44 placing first.
“Brian Johnson set out of his ream and ran the 200 with out me asking and did very well he is really showing that he is a team player cares for the team,” said Coach Thomas
Jonathon Robinson place second clocking a 10.54 and Adrian Williams placed fifth. Johnson placed first in the 200 running a 21.0.
Kevin Harris placed second in the 400 with a 47.41 time. In the men’s 1500 Charles Moon placed fourth improving his time to 4:08.55.
The relay team took first place in the 4×100 with a 40.40 time and team A placed second in the 4×400 with a time of 3:13.80 and team B placed third, running a 3:17.60. In the long jump Johnson took first place jumping a 26-03.75 and beat out the meet record of 26-3, Gregory Corbette placed fifth, Willyerd Collier placed sixth and Jeremy Pierre place seventh. Men Triple Pierre placed third jumped 49-09.25. Austin Mumphrey placed first in the shot put with 52-10.25 throw. In the discus Richard Celestine placed second throwing 154-1/2.
“Overall right now on a scale from 1-10 I say we are a 7 1/2,” said Thomas
This week the track team will compete in one of the biggest meets of year, the Texas Relays at the University of Texas at Austin, April 4-7.
