After sweeping the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-0, in last weekend’s Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader series, the (31-5) fell 13-2 to cross town foe Louisiana State University (25-13).
“This does not make us a bad team,” said Southern head coach Roger Cador. “They have been playing extremely good baseball lately.”
The 13-2 loss to LSU was the Jaguars worst loss in over three years.
“We are not going to accept defeat,” said Cador. “We are still a great team, we just have to regroup and concentrate on the rest of the season.”
The Tigers held the Jaguars scoreless through eight innings, before right fielder Theo Dumas singled to drive in the Southern’s only runs of the night.
The Jaguars, who are known for their ability to hit the ball well, failed to get anything going offensively until the last two innings of the game.
“We just did not hit the ball well that night,” said Rickie Weeks, who was recently voted the Best Sophomore in the nation by Baseball America. “We couldn’t get anything going.”
Credited with the loss for the Southern was David Mouton, his first on the season.
“We just couldn’t get our pitching staff going, we hit a few, walked too many,” said Cador. “LSU just played good baseball … they made some great plays.”
“I told the team, I am not overly disappointed in them, we just did not hit up to our capabilities. We made some critical mistakes.-“
“The score doesn’t tell the entire story,” said LSU head coach Smoke Laval. “They are a good team … anyone who meets them in NCAA regional play better know what to expect with this team.”
