Southern University Interdenominational Gospel Choir and other Historically Black College gospel choirs will join voices this Friday, April 12, at the Bethany World Prayer Center in Baker at 7 p.m.
Southern University Student Government Association, Bethany World Prayer Center and Cox Communications are hosting the SWAC Gospel Explosion 2002.
“Southern University helps students grow intellectually, socially and physically, but spiritually as well. One group that has done this is the Interdenominational Gospel Choir,” said Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Raymond Downs.
“It’s going to be really nice for all the schools to come together and praise the Lord,” said junior Donald Manuel, a music major from Lake Charles. Donald sees the gospel choir as “a church family away from home.”
Students Worshipping and Accepting Christ and the SWAC, want to celebrate Gospel music and show the talent in choirs from around the Southwest.
“This will bring all historically black colleges together showing off talent musically in gospel, not just hip hop. This gives the institution a chance to get together and fellowship,” said choir member Tonya Washington, a sophomore in political science from Slidell.
Choirs that are expected to perform are Alcorn State University, Grambling State University, Prairie View University, Baptist Student Movement Choir, Texas Southern University, and Southern University. The Gospel Explosion welcomes special guest performances by Louisiana State University and Jonathan Williams of Ruston. The Gospel Explosion is free and open to the public.
