Six wins in four days, an incredible feat for almost any team…Unless you are the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball champions, the Southern Jaguars, then it is just par for the course.
“Winning six-games in four days is great accomplishment,” said outfielder Theo Dumas, junior sports therapy and accounting major from Sacramento, Calif. “I feel we are just starting to show the power of Southern baseball, I believe we haven’t reached our maximum ability or potential. This team is a group of talented players, we have a lot of young guys who can do a lot.”
The Southern University Jaguars (13-3, 9-1) took on and defeated Grambling State University (11-10, 5-7) in four games over the weekend before doing battle with the Bisons of Howard University, in a non-conference match up.
“It was a good series, both of them,” said Southern head coach Roger Cador. “The team played really well.”
The six-game home stretch for the Jaguars began Saturday, March 16 at Lee-Hines Field, with the first of a four-game series with Grambling State.
The Jaguars overtook the Tigers 2-1 and 7-6 in Saturday’s back-to-back contests.
They then cushioned their lead over the rest of the SWAC with 15-10 and 15-5 victories over GSU on Sunday.
“Saturday’s game’s were really close,” said Cador. “It was great that we were able to come out and get some big hits.”
In their two-game series with Howard University (1-17), the Jaguars used their entire pitching staff in their 7-5 and 18-11 victories.
“We used a lot of pitchers … we gave people who haven’t had opportunities to pitch in a game situation since the season began an opportunity to get some playing time … our pitching needs to be fine tuned.”
Making big plays offensively in the second game against Howard was short- stop Fernando Pueblo, who had two homeruns, for a career high of six RBIs.
“Pueblo was the recipient of good pitching, the person batting in front of Rickie Weeks usually sees a lot of fast balls,” said Cador.
“Overall I was really proud of the team’s effort,” said Cador.
The Jaguars will take on the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24, at 1p.m., at Lee-Hines Field.
