The last weekend of February, proved to be a winning weekend for Southern University athletics. In addition to the men’s track team claiming the 2002 SWAC Indoor Championship title, the Southern bowling team also earned the title of SWAC Champion.
“They all bowled spectacular games in the tournament I am very proud of them,” said Southern head coach Karen Couvillion.
February 21, SU competed against Alabama A&M University, defeating them 7,555 to 5,852. The next game of the day pitted the Jaguars against Jackson State University whom SU defeated 7,708 to 6,056.
“We stayed focused and most of all had fun and that is part of what I contribute to my 300 game,” said Lyndsey Stewart, who bowled a perfect 300, in the second game of the tournament.
“We accomplished what we set out to do … But it’s just like another tournament to us,” said Reynika Tillery.
After Texas Southern University eliminated Alabama A&M University, Southern defeated the defending champions TSU by 464 pin falls a score of 5,175 to 4,711 pin falls.
In addition to winning the title, four SU bowlers captured all-tournament honors; Lyndsey Stewart, Michelle Rangel, Reynika Tillery and Daphne Buelterman.
Next up for the Jaguar bowling team, are the qualifying matches for the NCAA Tourney.
