Last year’s Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Newcomer of the Year, Jacklyn Winfield, is now the SWAC’s 2002 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. The men’s basketball team whose season was lackluster at best, produced this year’s Freshman of the Year, Nicholas Egland.
“Jackie has just been incredible,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said. “She’s made my life a lot easier.”
“I’ve enjoyed everything. Every coach should have at least one great player, a difference maker, in their career.”
Pugh and Winfield, who both came to Southern two years ago, from Meridian Community College, in Meridian, Miss., have been the driving forces behind the Jaguars rise to greatness.
Winfield is currently ranked 11th in the nation in scoring, with 21.7 points per game, tied for 18th in steals (3.4 pg) and seventh in the SWAC in assists with 3.6 pg.
“If you’re down three points or seven points, and she’s in the game, you’ve got a shot at it,” Pugh said. “At any point, she can hit a 3-pointer and swing the momentum.”
Since January, Freshman of the Year Nicholas Egland has had career highs of 25 rebounds and 27 points.
Egland, a 6-foot-6 graduate of Lake Charles-Boston High has nine double-doubles in his last 14 games and is averaging 12.5 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game in conference games.
Other Southern University athletics receiving SWAC honors include Victor Tarver, Tammy Bullock and Tremesha Colbert.
