This time next week, I hope to be in Birmingham, cheering both Southern basketball teams on to SWAC victory.
It’s hard to believe that less than two months ago, the future of the men’s team was questionable. I mean, they were 1-11 coming out of the semester break. The men have done something many people thought impossible; fight back and have a chance at making it to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament.
At the time that this piece is being written (Tuesday, February 26, 2:06), the men are just two games out of eighth place and a spot in the tourney (they have a game Thursday night after the paper goes to print, see SouthernDigest.com for the story).
Can you believe it? I may have ragged on them to anyone who would listen. But, I also bragged about them to anyone who would listen.
The young men who make up Ben Jobe’s group of “runnin’ and gunnin’” Jaguars, are obviously talented individuals. If they were not, they would not be here.
They are also intelligent because they listened to me. In case no one noticed, shortly after I wrote my first editorial for this semester, the boys shaped up. This was the piece in which, I voiced my opinions regarding the team.
This was also the piece in which, I handed them a great piece of advice. That advice being only when the men came together would they be able to win, only then would they be a team.
It was because of my advice (this is only MY opinion) that they have come so far.
Finally, I can take credit for something good.
I have been blamed for everything out of the ordinary that has happened involving a Southern team or athlete.
When Terrence Levy was injured in the game against Mississippi Valley, it just happened to occur after I called him the “Weakest Link.” When Victor Tarver and Brian Johnson were in an accident, it happened as my editorial was being typed into the computer.
Purely coincidence, I tell you, coincidence.
Well, hopefully if they win Saturday, I will be thanked for my piece of wonderful advice.
I look forward to them going up against Alcorn in the tournament. I feel they are capable of defeating them.
But, who knows? I guess I will have to wait and see like the rest of the world.
