The Southwestern Athletic Conference basketball tournament is now upon us. The top eight team in both the men and women’s program, participated in the quarterfinals, Tuesday, March 5.
On the women’s side, number one seed Southern University defeated number eight Prairie View 69-44. In game two, number four Jackson State University defeated number five Alcorn State University, 60-46. Number three Grambling State defeated number six Alabama A&M 83-75. In game fou, Alabama State, the number two seed reigned victorious over number seven, Texas Southern, 73-45.
In the men’s quarterfinal games, number one Alcorn State took on Grambling defeating them 108-84. Number four Texas Southern defeated Mississippi Valley, the num-ber five team, 68-61. Number six Jackson State was defeated 60-56 by number three Alabama State. In the final game of the quarterfinals, the number two team Alabama A&M defeated the number seven team Prairie View, 114-82.
After being re-seeded, the semifinal match-ups will be as follows: Women-(1) Southern (24-4) vs. (4) Jackson State (16-12)-noon, (2) Alabama State (22-6) vs. (3) Grambling State (18-9)-2 p.m. Men-(4) Texas Southern (11-16) vs. (1) Alcorn St (19-9), 6:30 p.m., (3) Alabama St (18-12) vs. (2) Alabama A&M (19-9)-8:30 p.m.
The games will be held at Fair Park Arena, in Birmingham, Ala., with the semifinals to be held on Friday. The finals, which will feature the winners of each game, will be held Saturday, beginning with the ladies, at 3 p.m. Tip-off for the men’s final is set for 6 p.m.
