The Jags are adjusting better and showed it in their 71-58 win over Jarvis Christian Tuesday. Head coach Rob Spivery says that everything new takes time and once the team gets a lot more comfortable in understanding what they are doing, then they will play harder and be better at what they are doing.
“The first four games was just real tough opponents for us on the road and they were difficult to play against,” said Spivery. “Since that time we have worked on some things and we improved in many areas. It’s still going to take some time before we become the team I feel as coach that we can be.”
In a game where the lead changed five times, Southern (1-4) went into halftime with a 26-24 lead. The Jaguars went strong on the defense early in the second half, forcing Jarvis Christian into turnovers that resulted in easy baskets for Southern.
“We had four tough games and this game we started to play a little tougher,” said senior guard Chris Alexander. “We need to work on everything, but these games are getting us ready for the conference games.”
Alexander led Southern with 20 points. Senior forward Alvin Mott scored 17 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Peter Cipriano had eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds, along with four assists, two steals and one blocked shot. Senior center Jerrid Campbell had six points and seven rebounds, but stayed in foul trouble most of the night.
“As we continue to play these games, it get us ready to let us know what else we need to improve on in order to get ready for the SWAC season,” Spivery said. “That’s what we are preparing for.”
The Jaguars will travel to Ruston to take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Thomas Assembly Center. The game will be televised live on ESPN Regional Networks and carried by Cox Sports TV, local cable channel 38. They will go to Hammond to play Southeastern Louisiana on Monday at 7 p.m. The Jags will face Louisiana Tech again at home on Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.
