For those new at Southern University, the experience on The Bluff can be overwhelming. Whether you are a freshman or just arriving, new choices and new responsibilities as a Southernite may put a little fear in the hearts of students.
Without proper leadership and guidance, students can get off-track or “academically wander” from the overall purpose of attending an institution of higher learning, which is to obtain a degree.
Students who keep their eye on the prize know that going to class is pertinent when it comes to academics. No one wants to be on academic probation.
But if you must attend parties, prepare yourself. Everyone should be well rounded, but know what’s important.
Speaking of important, Tristan Mitchell, a sophomore criminal justice major from Bastrop, said not succumbing to peer pressure is one of the most important factors when new to campus.
“It’s important to stay anchored and not let the atmosphere take over your education,” Mitchell said. “Keep your head on straight and don’t stray away from your morals.”
If morality is what students seek, perhaps finding a place to worship could be next on students’ agendas. Students can find a list of religious organizations in the office of student affairs, located on the second floor of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union.
“I advise everyone to keep the Lord in your life,” said Jessica Minor, a senior mass commutation major from St. Charles, Mo.
“You wouldn’t have gotten this far without Him.”
Now that you’ve “found religion,” you should not have to pray so hard to pass a test, especially if you study. Most instructors give ample notice for major exams. But Jarmica Andrews, a sophomore education major from LaPlace, said being prepared is the key to success in the classrooms.
“Not studying prior to the test and cramming will cause you to go blank when you receive it,” she said.
Regardless of how students conduct themselves while on “The Yard,” rules and regulations handbooks are available for practically every facet of Southern University.
From dorm living to parking and driving, students have information at hand, whether it’s in their department or online, at www.subr.edu.
