The tables have turned slightly on the Southern University football team.
There was a time when Southern played Prairie View A&M, its next foe, and the Jaguars would usually lead in major conference statistics.
Things have changed. But the Jags will see just how much Saturday at 7 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium when they play the Panthers.
Despite the fact Saturday’s game was almost cancelled due to lodging issues, Southern will play Prairie View, but now it’s the Panthers who want to be noticed as powerhouses (though it is still early in the season).
It’s a case of one team seeking validation and lodging, while another team wants a win.
The Jaguars, led by sophomore quarterback J.C. Lewis, will go into Saturday’s match up without a win and with a questionable ground attack. Lewis, in his debut as a Southern starter rushed for only 27 yards last week against Mississippi Valley State in their 31-28 loss.
“We blew numerous opportunities to make plays on both sides of the ball,” said Jags’ head coach Pete Richardson.
According to Richardson, Southern’s running game will look towards sophomore rusher Larry Nichols for a little guidance in jumpstarting the rushing offense.
The Panthers, meanwhile, ran all over Paul Quinn in their season opener 39-12. Prairie View leads the conference in rushing yards and scored five touchdowns against Paul Quinn.
