The Southern University Lady Jaguars volleyball team picked up their first home and Southwestern Athletic Conference win Wednesday, with a 3-2 victory over the Texas Southern University Lady Tigers.
“Like I say all the time, the wins are for the ladies and I take the losses,” said head coach Nathaniel Denu. “The ladies played really hard tonight. They persevered through all that Texas Southern through at them.”
Southern (3-2, 1-0 SWAC) was led by sophomore outside hitter TaRhonda White, had 22 kills and 27 digs. Senior outside hitter Krystal Young – who was last week’s SWAC defensive player of the week – had 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Shametia Whitaker finished with 11 kills, 3 service aces and 16 digs.
“We are happy with the win and look forward to the rest of the season,” Denu said.
The Lady Jags will not see the inside of Seymour Gymnasium until Sept. 30 when Prairie View A&M comes to town.
The Blue and Gold will travel to Savannah, Ga., where they will play in the Savannah State University tournament on Sept. 9 and 10.
