Recently, HBCUconnect.com announced its new program, “Make 1, Give 1” in conjunction with The Timberland Company as an initiative to help create a better future for students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Timberland will donate one dollar for every boot design submitted on Timberland.com by an HBCUconnect.com member.
The company will continue to donate money until Nov. 30. All proceeds will go toward the HBCUconnect.com Scholarship Fund.
To be eligible for an HBCUconnect.com scholarship, the student must attend or plan to enroll full-time at a historically black college or university and be of African, Native American or Hispanic American decent. Several scholarships will be awarded each semester to minority students attending an HBCU and will cover up to $1,000 of the student’s tuition.
“It gives minorities a chance in a world where they are underprivileged,” said Melissa Green, a junior philosophy major from New Orleans.
Started in 1999 by William Moss III and Yusef Frasier, HBCUconnect.com focused on increasing the awareness of HBCU educational institutions, resulting in the vast majority of black high school students choosing to attend HBCUs. HBCUconnect.com continues to strive to be a cohesive link between historically black colleges and universities worldwide.
“The Web site gives more networking opportunities and it helps students gain more resources,” said Kendrick Hunt, a senior electrical engineering major from Baton Rouge.
When HBCUconnect.com first started, its main goal was to keep alumni from historically black colleges and universities connected. After the large amounts of feedback it received, the site started to serve not only alumni, but also current students.
“Eventually, we want to be the point of connectivity between alumni and students,” said Daniel Moss, vice president of business development for the Web site.
Now, with over 290,000 members, HBCUconnect.com is able to provide free information and services for the HBCU community, including currently enrolled and prospective students, parents, faculty and alumni. The site features exclusive scholarships, black college profiles, college tours, alumni information, HBCU events and more.
