For the first time this season, Southern won their second game in a row when they beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 27-21 on Saturday. The game put the Jaguars closer to eliminating the possibility of a losing season, which would be coach Pete Richardson’s first on The Bluff.
“We made a few adjustments to help (the offensive line) out,” Richardson said. (Sophomore quarterback J. C. Lewis) “made some key reads. When he gets some time, he can throw the football.”
The Jaguars (4-4 overall, 4-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to pick up the road win. Lewis finished with 26 completions of 38 attempts for 349 yards and two touchdowns against an unresponsive Golden Lions’ (2-8,2-6) squad.
“A lot of our athletes came out and played very well,” Lewis said. “I was just feeling it. We started to get into the rhythm and we just kept scoring.”
Senior wide receiver James Vernon caught eight passes for 97 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore receiver Gerard Landry caught seven passes for a career-high 106 yards. Junior wide-out Albert Turner had four catches for 95 yards and one score. Turner was selected as this week’s highlighted conference specialist for his additional efforts, returning two kicks for 97 yards, including a career-high runback of 84 yards. Although the Jags got another notch in the win column, their rushing game did little to help. Senior rusher Larry Nichols efforts in running 24 carries for 62 yards and a touchdown, along with junior Bobby Rose’s combined five yards was knocked by the fruitless -12 yards Lewis was set back.
